Sawdust blocks
Your sawdust block is a mix of hardwood pellets, bran, and water. The block has been sterilized and is ready to be mixed with mushroom spawn of your choice. Please note that this block will only work with wood loving mushrooms, such as oyster mushrooms, shiitake, lion's mane, maitake, reishi, etc. It will not work for portobello, white button, and “magic” mushrooms that prefer manure based substrate.
Please note that sterilized block are susceptible to contamination. Please check your bag for any signs of contamination BEFORE inoculating it. You are looking for any dark white or green growth. If you see any, please let us know right away and we will replace the product.
To diminish chances of contamination, make sure you are working on a clean surface that has been disinfected with alcohol. Spraying Lysol around the surfaces and in the air tends to help a lot. Preferably, do your work outdoors on fresh air.
Without opening your bag of spawn, break it down with your fingers so all grain is nice and crumbly.
Cut the top of your sawdust bag along the seal.
Put the spawn inside the bag and close it right away with a zip tie or a piece of rope. Just ensure that the bag is inflated with air.
Break down the block and mix it thoroughly with spawn. Preferably, there will not be any spawn sitting on the top of the block.
Place in a warm, dark place for about 2-3 weeks until full colonization (kitchen cabinet or closet works fine).
Allow some air ventilation every now and then.
When the block is fully white (colonized), you are ready to fruit the mushrooms.
